Nepal Disaster Relief

On August 26, 2026, a glacial lake outburst near the Nepal–China border sent catastrophic flash floods down the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river corridors in Nepal. Entire villages and neighboring districts were buried in mud and debris. Roads, bridges, water systems and hydropower installations were destroyed, and by early September more than 10,000 households were in need of immediate relief, with search and rescue still underway.

The Assam Foundation of North America (AFNA) has responded with two contributions from its Disaster Relief Fund, totaling USD 3,000 in direct giving and USD 4,000 in delivered value after matching.

Our Contributions

1. Nepal Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund — NPR 300,000 (USD 2,000)

AFNA contributed Nepali Rupees 300,000 (approximately USD 2,000) to the Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund, the Government of Nepal's central channel for coordinating emergency response, search and rescue, and relief distribution across the affected districts.

2. Save the Children — USD 1,000, matched 100% to USD 2,000

AFNA also contributed USD 1,000 to Save the Children organization. Through an active donor matching program, this contribution was doubled to USD 2,000, funding one month of food support for 2,000 displaced families.

A Note on Our Funds

Both contributions were made from AFNA's Disaster Relief Fund. No funds from the Assam Flood Relief campaign were diverted for this purpose. Every dollar contributed by our donors toward Assam flood relief remains fully committed to Assam, and our work with our implementing partners in the state continues without interruption.

AFNA maintains a separate Disaster Relief Fund precisely so that we can respond to humanitarian emergencies beyond Assam without compromising the commitments we have made to our primary programs.

Why Nepal

AFNA's roots will always remain towards Assam, but our neighbors in the eastern Himalayas share the same rivers, the same monsoon, and increasingly the same climate vulnerabilities. Communities across Assam know what it means to lose a home to floodwater. We also have had a thriving Nepali community in Assam over many generations who have been part of the economic and social backbone of our state.

We extend our deepest condolences to the families who have lost loved ones, and our solidarity with the people of Nepal as they begin the long work of recovery.
