AFNA steward Nabarun Das performs an annual field visit of one of our key healthcare programs in Guwahati at Kalyani Niwas

Kalyani Niwas is a girls’ child shelter and protection home in Guwahati for ages 6-18 where AFNA has been providing medical needs (including doctor) since the last 6~7 years. There are currently 35 children (both permanent and temporary) residing in the home receiving school education, shelter, food and various vocational education and training.

Based on field visit

  1. The conditions of the home were really good and the children were motivated and happy

  2. Kalyani is trying to identify an aftercare program for children who reach age 18 and along with that some of the children have been hired internally within the Assam Child and Welfare Society programs itself. This was a record change for Kalyani as children are growing up and now after- care has now become a critical need to ensure a robust / smooth transition to adulthood with self sufficient capabilities to sustain themselves in the long run.

  3. Financial Assistance is solely now coming from donor funds.

  4. We discussed a “sponsorship” program where individual children (such as a bright girl child in science and education, or a special needs blind child trying to win a national singing competition) where AFNA could help highlighting that need in North America during active communications or via identifying individual donors.
