About

About

Assam Foundation of North America is a publicly supported non-profit organization with foundation status serving since 1982, under section 509(a) of the Internal Revenue Code. We established as a non-political organization to foster social, cultural, technical, and educational exchanges between Assam and North America. Another key objective was to promote the human potential of the indigenous people of Northeast India, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Tripura.

Our History

AFNA was founded in 1982 by several eminent community members such as Late Dr. Jiten Borpujari, Late Dr. Dilip Dutta, Dr. Atul C. Sarma, Dr. Monoranjan Bezboruah, Late Barada Sarma, Mrs. Rita Das, Mr. Amiya Kumar Das, Mr. Anis Ahmed, Dr. Deva Kanta Borah, Late Debabrata Sarma, Dr. Binoy Bordoloi, Dr. Debojit Barua, Late Dr. Lohit-Dutta Barua, Dr. Bijon Sarma, Dr. Nabajyoti Kataky, Mr. Mohesh Kalita, Dr. Elly Bhuyan, Mr. Chandan Mahanta, Mr. Manoranjan Hazarika, Dr. Pradip Das, and Dr. Nripen Barua. These founders, who emigrated to America, had an altruistic vision of helping Assam in times of need.

In its early years, AFNA paid homage to American emissaries who built connections between the United States and Assam, including reverend Miles Bronson, who contributed to the Assamese language, and distinguished artist Noni Borpuzari. Over the years, AFNA has actively contributed to the social and economic well-being of the people of Assam while connecting with the community in the West.

Our commitment steadily grew into a vociferous platform creating a strong movement of philanthropy, volunteerism and the spirit of giving back to one’s community.
