Pain and Palliative Care

By Partha Gogoi

Assam Foundation of North America would like to present to our community members a wonderful initiative

being carried out at the Guwahati Pain and Palliative Care Society. We have come to know of this initiative

from Mrs Biva Chowdhary of Guwahati

when she was visiting her son Mr Sid

Chowdhary in Washington DC area.

Mrs Chowdhary lost her daughter to

cancer in 2005. The support structure

for helping cancer patients (both for

those in Guwahati and those coming

from outside Guwahati) is very minimal.

Mrs Chowdhary has given countless

hours to this wonderful organization

– still there is room for much more help.

Below is a description of what Dr

Goswami and his selfless team of

nurses, health aides and a few

dedicated volunteers are trying to

do.AFNA would like to ask for charitable

contributions towards this effort.

Please keep in mind that a $25

contribution is enough to train a health

aide. Even a dollar can go a long way

AFNA would like to ask for charitable contributions towards this effort. Please keep in mind that a $25 contribution is enough

to provide medicines to those who cannot afford it. Let us do our bit to help those in tremendous pain and suffering. Even if our contribution does not cure cancer, it will help in alleviating the pain and improve the support structure for those in extreme need.

From Dr Dinesh Chandra Goswami, Hon Secretary cum CEO
“The Guwahati Pain and Palliative Care Society is the pioneer organization in the Eastern India to develop Palliative Care service in 1999. Established by a handful of compassionate people, much needed oral morphine was made available to the needy ones free of cost sine then. Apart from the daily outpatient clinic run by the Society, the Society been emphasizing on Training & Education of Professionals, Common man, family of patients and importantly the patients when they cannot find their way in the face of life threatening illness. Improving quality of life and ensuring dignified end of life in most of chronic illnesses including old age has been the motto of the organization.
The core group consisted of 4 doctors, 3 nurses, 7 Home health Aides supported by few dedicated volunteers. The Society has been successful in initiating link centers in Digboi, Jorhat and Silchar. Apart from advocating the government to integrate the Palliative Care to the basic health care programs, the Society is endeavoring community participation so that it can be delivered at the doorstep in the appropriate time & need.
All services of the Society has been free, we accept donation whatsoever, and we are sure a five rupee coin make a lot of difference to one in pain who otherwise cannot afford it for the day quota of medicine.
We have a long way to go, what is being done is less than 1% coverage!”
